Instructions
Before Treatment
This procedure will be performed using local anesthesia. There are usually no restrictions after the procedure concerning driving or returning to work. A doctor is available for consultation at all times should a problem arise after your treatment. Continue all medications for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems and any other conditions as recommended by your physician. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.
Please eat a full breakfast or lunch as applicable.
If you have been advised by your physician or dentist to use antibiotic premedication because of mitral valve prolapse (MVP), heart murmur, hip, knee, cardiac or other prosthesis, or if you have rheumatic heart disease, please make sure you are on the appropriate antibiotic on the day of your appointment. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.
If you can take ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), it does help reduce inflammation when taken pre-operatively. We recommend 3 tablets of Advil or 2 tablets of Tylenol, and we will administer in our office before treatment.
Post Op FAQS
Your tooth and its surrounding gum tissues may be somewhat tender for several days. This is a result of the infection that brought you into our office as well as the endodontic manipulation during treatment. This is absolutely normal and is part of the healing process. You can expect your tooth to be sore for about 3-5 days. When you touch it, brush it, and chew, it will be tender. Remember: the more your tooth hurts to bite prior to the procedure, the more tender it will be after the procedure. Also, lower teeth that are retreated (with a “black spot” on the x-ray) tend to be the most uncomfortable after treatment.
Every patient is different and there are varying levels of discomfort. Some patients may even have discomfort for longer (i.e. two weeks). If it lessens every day, then you are headed in the right direction. Please make sure you continue to brush and floss the area normally.
To minimize your discomfort, you were given over-the-counter pain medication, prior to anesthesia [600mg Ibuprofen or 650 mg acetaminophen]. We gave this to you to stay ahead of any discomfort. It is recommended that you continue to take the medication, if you have PAIN or NO PAIN, around the clock every 6 hours for the next 3 days [600mg Ibuprofen or 650 mg acetaminophen]. A good way to remember this is to take a dose, with food, in the morning, noon, dinner and bedtime. By taking your post operative medications in this manner, you will keep your discomfort to a minimum. If you allow the pain to return because you skipped a dose, it will be harder to get rid of the discomfort. It’s a good idea to keep your pain medication on your nightstand so that you can do a dose at night. If you sleep longer than 6 hours or skip a dose, be aware that your tooth may be more tender in the morning. Please see the chart for dosage recommendations, based on the level of pain. Start your pain medications at the Mild Pain level and increase as needed.
Pain Management Medications – Take Every 6 Hours

Mild Pain
600 mg Ibuprofen
650 mg Acetaminophen
Moderate Pain
600 mg Ibuprofen + 650 mg Acetaminophen
Hydrocodone (7.5mg/325mg) + 325 mg Acetaminophen
Severe Pain
Follow the Moderate Pain regimen. We may need to add an antibiotic and possibly a steroid. Please contact our office.
Advil or Motrin = Ibuprofen. Do not exceed 3200mg/24 hours. If NSAIDS cannot be used for pain management, the tooth tends to be sorer after treatment and healing tends to take longer.
Tylenol = Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen comes in two doses, Regular (325mg) and Extra Strength (500mg). Do not exceed 3000mg/24 hours. Note: Hydrocodone already contains 325mg Acetaminophen per dose.
Aleve = Naproxen Sodium. We suggest taking Ibuprofen instead of Aleve because you can take Ibuprofen more often. If you prefer Aleve, please check the dosage on the bottle.
If you were given a prescription pain medication like Hydrocodone, the best way to take this is in conjunction with your over-the-counter medication — do not stop taking the Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen. For the most effective pain management, alternate between the medications every 3 hours (For example: you would take your over the counter medication at noon, 6 pm, midnight, 6 am; while the Hydrocodone you would take at 3 pm, 9 pm, 3 am, 9 am. Your schedule will vary.)
If your pain is still too severe and you are taking both 600mg Ibuprofen and Hydrocodone or Acetaminophen, please call the office for additional information and possibly a different prescription. At this time, we may prescribe you an antibiotic and/or a steroid.
If you experience any swelling after treatment (for example, your face looks asymmetrical when you look in the mirror), or your pain is not responding to the medication, please call the office and we will prescribe you an antibiotic and/or steroid. Do not be alarmed if this happens as it sometimes can occur after treatment.
This is most common in patients who have a “black spot” associated with their tooth in the x-ray. If you have been given an antibiotic, it is important that you complete every pill in your bottle, following the recommended dosage. If swelling occurs while on an antibiotic, we may have to switch your antibiotic.
If you have been prescribed an antibiotic and are experiencing significant diarrhea, discontinue the antibiotic immediately and call our office. This side effect can happen with any antibiotic but is more common with Clindamycin. We also suggest taking a probiotic or eating yogurt when taking any antibiotic.
If endodontic therapy has been initiated on your teeth, it is essential that treatment be completed. If it is not, the tooth will become uncomfortable and may eventually be lost. It is possible that your root canal may take more than one visit if it was too infected or difficult.
Once the root canal is done, you will need a final restoration such as a crown, so that the tooth is properly sealed and protected.
At the completion of your root canal, your regular dentist will be sent a full report with your radiographs, so he/she knows your treatment with our office is completed.
Please make an appointment with your general dentist within 2 weeks for a final restoration on the treated tooth. If your dentist is booked for longer than two weeks, please do not panic, but take their first available appointment. We would like to see you for a follow-up appointment in either 6 months or a year. This is to evaluate the bone supporting the tooth to assure proper healing. There is no fee for this visit and the appointment is typically only 10-15 minutes long.
If you need to speak to someone after hours, call the office at 305-274-3636 and leave a message in the appropriate doctor’s emergency mailbox and Dr. Barros or Dr. Gomez will call you back personally. For the most timely response, call our office during normal business hours when possible. Please be aware that the after-hours service is available for patients of record only. Also, if you feel like a prescription is necessary, we do ask that you try to call before 10 pm and after 8 am as these are the hours that the pharmacy is open. Have your pharmacy phone number ready and make sure to spell your name, leave your date of birth, and leave a phone number when using the after-hours service.
Durante los primeros 3-5 días después del tratamiento podrá notar sensibilidad en el diente y las encías. Esto es el resultado de la infección y la manipulación endodóntica durante el tratamiento. Antes de salir de nuestra clínica se le dieron 600mg de Ibuprofeno para minimizar el dolor. Se lo dimos mientras todavía estaba entumecido para prevenir cualquier dolor. Se le recomienda tomar 600mg (tres pastillas de las que se venden en la farmacia) de Ibuprofeno cada seis horas. Para recordarse mejor, puede planear de tomar su dosis por la mañana, a medio día, a la hora de cenar y antes de dormir. Al tomar sus medicamentos de esta manera, no sentirá mucho malestar. Si deja pasar más tiempo y le empieza a doler, entonces será más difícil quitárselo. Así por favor, durante los primeros 3 días tome Advil o Ibuprofeno cada 6 horas TENGA o NO TENGA dolor. Sería mejor tomar cada dosis con comida cuando sea posible. Mantenga sus medicamentos en la mesilla de noche para que pueda tomarlos de noche. Si duerme más de 6 horas o se salta una dosis, sentirá su diente más sensible por la mañana.
Si se le recetó un medicamento como Hydrocodone, debe de tomarlo junto con los 600mg de Ibuprofeno, no deje de tomar el Ibuprofeno. Para controlar el dolor alterne los medicamentos cada 3 horas. Por ejemplo: tome 600 mg de Ibuprofeno y 3 horas después tome una pastilla de Hydrocodone, y a las 3 horas otra vez el Ibuprofeno y así siga. De este modo puede tomar un medicamento cada 3 horas sin perjudicarse. Si le hace falta un analgésico adicional puede tomar un Tylenol a la hora de tomar el Hydrocodone para que sea más efectivo. Asegúrese de no sobrepasar los 3000mg de Tylenol/Acetaminofén al día—el Hydrocodone ya tiene 325 de Tylenol/ Acetaminofén.
Para los pacientes que no toleran los narcóticos (nauseas o vómitos) y necesitan un máximo control del dolor, pueden alternar entre 600mg de Ibuprofeno y 2 Tylenol Maximum Strength cada 3 horas. No exceda 2400mg de Ibuprofeno o 300mg de Tylenol en un día.
Si todavía siente mucho dolor tomando los 600mg de Ibuprofeno y Hydrocodone o Tylenol, por favor llámenos para mas información o posiblemente una receta diferente. Puede que le recetemos un esteroide. Los dientes de abajo que son un segundo tratamiento o un re-tratamiento tienden a ser más dolorosos.
Advil o Motrin contienen ibuprofeno. No exceda los 3200 mg en un período de 24 horas. Si no puede usar antiinflamatorios no esteroides (AINEs) para el manejo del dolor, es común que el diente esté más sensible después del tratamiento y que el proceso de recuperación sea más lento.
Tylenol contiene acetaminofén. El acetaminofén viene en dos presentaciones: regular (325 mg) y extra fuerte (500 mg). No exceda los 3000 mg en un período de 24 horas.
Nota: la hidrocodona ya contiene 325 mg de acetaminofén por dosis.
Aleve contiene naproxeno sódico. Recomendamos tomar ibuprofeno en lugar de Aleve, ya que el ibuprofeno puede tomarse con mayor frecuencia. Si prefiere Aleve, revise cuidadosamente la dosificación en el envase.
Si se le recetó un medicamento para el dolor como hidrocodona, lo más recomendable es tomarlo junto con su medicamento de venta libre; no suspenda el ibuprofeno o el acetaminofén. Para un manejo del dolor más efectivo, alterne los medicamentos cada 3 horas.
Por ejemplo: tome su medicamento de venta libre a las 12:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 12:00 a.m. y 6:00 a.m., mientras que la hidrocodona se tomaría a las 3:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., 3:00 a.m. y 9:00 a.m. (Este horario puede variar según su caso).
Si el dolor continúa siendo muy fuerte y ya está tomando 600 mg de ibuprofeno junto con hidrocodona o acetaminofén, por favor comuníquese con nuestra oficina para recibir indicaciones adicionales o una posible prescripción diferente. En ese caso, podríamos recetarle un antibiótico y/o un esteroide.
Si tiene hinchazón después del tratamiento, por ejemplo si se le nota en la cara, llámenos para que le recetemos un antibiótico. No se asuste, a veces eso ocurre como resultado del tratamiento y es más común en pacientes que hayan tenido una marca negra en la radiografía de su diente.
Si se le recetó un antibiótico, por favor, tome hasta la última pastilla. Si la hinchazón ocurre mientras está tomando el antibiótico, es posible que le cambiemos de antibiótico.
Si experimenta una diarrea severa con el antibiótico deje de tomarlo inmediatamente y llame a nuestra clínica. Este efecto segundario puede ocurrir con cualquier antibiótico, pero es más común con Clindamycin. También le sugerimos tomar un probiótico o yogur mientras toma cualquier antibiótico.
Si se le ha empezado el proceso de la endodoncia es esencial que se le acabe todo el tratamiento. Si no, le empezará a doler y puede que resulte en la pérdida del diente. Es posible que su endodoncia requiera más de una visita si el diente esta infectado o es un caso complicado. Una vez terminada el tratamiento, es posible que se le refiera a su dentista general para sellar el diente en la restauración final.
Al terminar el tratamiento endodóntico le mandaremos un reporte completo junto con las radiografías a su dentista para que sepa que el tratamiento está completo. Hágase una cita en las siguientes dos semanas para la restauración final del diente tratado.
Si su dentista no le puede ver en las dos semanas siguiendo el tratamiento, no se preocupe, pero debe de verle en la primera cita que le pueda dar. Tras el tratamiento nos gustaría verle en 6 meses o un año para evaluar el hueso que apoya el diente y asegurarnos de que se esté curando bien. No hay un costo para esa visita y dura sólo unos 10-15 minutos.

Gomez le llamarán personalmente. Recuerde por favor que para que le atiendan cuanto antes es mejor llamar a la oficina durante horas laborales cuando sea posible. Tenga en mente que el servicio fuera de horas laborales es solamente para pacientes de la clínica. Si requiere una receta llame entre las 8am y 10pm porque estas son las horas de la farmacia. Al dejar un mensaje, deletree su nombre y denos su fecha de nacimiento, su número de teléfono y el número telefónico de su farmacia.
