Dr. Jose Francisco Barros, DDS
Dr. Jose Francisco
Barros, DDS
Dr. Jose Francisco “Joe” Barros has devoted more than three decades to dentistry in the Miami area—first as a general dentist and later as a specialist in endodontics. After earning his D.D.S. from Emory University in 1987, he opened his private general dental practice. In 1999, he completed his postgraduate certificate in endodontics at Nova Southeastern University, where he also served as an adjunct professor for over 15 years, teaching both predoctoral and postgraduate students in clinical and didactic settings.
Dr. Barros’s professional career includes leadership and service at local, regional, and international levels. He has been president of the West Dade Dental Society (2006–2007), president of the Association of Alumni & Friends of the Nova Southeastern Postgraduate Endodontic Program (2002–2004), and president of the Riviera Study Club (1995). Internationally, he has participated in endodontic surgical externships, traveling with residents to Peru, Colombia, and Spain, and he has presented seminars at Caribbean Dental Seminars in Antigua and Barbados. His honors include the Florida Dental Association’s Project Dentist Care Leadership Award (2002) and the Urban Environment League’s Sallye Jude Award for Environmental Advocacy (2015).
Born in Ferrol, Spain, in 1961 after his parents fled Cuba, Dr. Barros immigrated with his family to Jacksonville, Florida, where he grew up exploring beaches, rivers, and forests. His early love of Florida’s natural environment inspired him to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Florida before pursuing dentistry.
This passion for conservation has paralleled his professional career: he joined the Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) in the 1980s, serving on its board since 1992 and as president since 2001. Under his leadership, TAS has been a driving force in protecting Biscayne Bay, preserving the Urban Development Boundary, and advancing the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. He has also served on the boards of Zoo Miami Foundation (2016–2019) and the Audubon of Florida (1995–1997), and was a longtime member of Miami-Dade County’s Environmental Endangered Lands Selection Committee.
Dr. Barros has maintained private practices limited to endodontics in Miami and Grand Cayman. Licensed in Florida, Georgia, and the Cayman Islands, he is an active member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, South Florida District Dental Association, American Association of Endodontists, and Florida Association of Endodontists. Outside of work, Dr. Barros enjoys traveling, live music, birding, and spending time with his wife of 34 years, Helen Torres, as well as with family and friends—often blending all of these passions into shared adventures.
